Burglaries scare residents at home
(September 03, 2004) Police are investigating two possibly related burglaries which occurred within two hours of each other last Saturday night, according to Mountain View Police spokesperson Jim Bennett.
On Aug. 28, around 1:37 a.m. a 19-year-old woman sleeping in her single-story apartment in the 800 block of East El Camino Real heard noises coming from outside her window.
Bennett said she awoke to find a male suspect standing in her room.
The woman to her roommate's room and reported the incident. However, the suspect fled through the window, which was covered only by a screen, before police arrived.
The suspect is described as standing 5 feet 8 inches tall and wearing a black, long-sleeve shirt, according to Bennett.
Nearly two hours later, a burglary was reported in the 1400 block of Ernestine Lane at a single-story home.
At approximately 3:20 a.m., a male suspect entered the home through an unlocked sliding glass door, Bennett said.
An 11-year-old girl got out of bed and walked into the hallway where she encountered the suspect, who allegedly put his hand over her mouth to muffle her screams.
Bennett said the girl was able to pull away from the suspect and slam her bedroom door as she screamed for her parents.
The suspect then ran out the front door before the girl's father awoke.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his mid to late 30s, 5 feet 8 inches tall with a "less than average" build. The suspect also had wrinkles on his face on either side of his nose and a full moustache. At the time of the crime, the suspect was wearing a dark-colored "beanie" style hat and a white T-shirt.
According to Laura Macias, who lives on the 1400 block of Ernestine Lane, residents have set up a neighborhood alert system in response to the robberies.
"We've just become so accustomed to how safe it is here; it was a big wake-up call," said Macias, who is a candidate for Mountain View City Council.
