Jazz at the Adobe Jazz at the Adobe (September 03, 2004)

Saturday concert features legend pianist John Hicks

By David Herbert

Mountain View stereo retailer Audio High will celebrate its seven-year anniversary this Saturday with a jazz concert at the Adobe Building.

The show will feature legendary jazz pianist John Hicks, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Roy McCurdy, as well as acclaimed jazz photographer Lee Tanner.

According to Audio High owner Michael Silver, who has produced jazz concerts before, the decision to put on the show was two-fold.

"Our primary reason is just to have fun and offer Mountain View a great concert and to help our community," he said. "We are also doing it to help some of our vendors with an open house we are having the same day to show their wares."

Despite the revenue from a $30 concert package and some snacks and drinks that will be on sale, Silver expects to spend about $20,000 on the show, emphasizing, "We're not going to make any money."

Audio High's commitment to the Mountain View community is well established. The store said it donates 25 percent of its profits to Response Ready, a local nonprofit that teaches emergency medicine to schools, businesses and individuals. Its employees also volunteer with the American Red Cross and the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber.

Event organizers are selling a $30 package which includes a guaranteed, preferred ticket along with a live concert CD that will be produced on the BluePort Jazz label, said Silver. All remaining seats will be free on a first-come, first-served basis. Concert-goers are encouraged to arrive early for the 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. sets, which are limited to 200 people per set.
