(October 15, 2004) Grupo Corpo returns to Stanford Lively Arts
By Robyn Israel
Founded in 1975 in their parents' home by brothers Rodrigo and Paulo Pederneiras (choreographer and artistic director respectively), Grupo Corpo is a family affair, which includes siblings Pedro and Miriam.
From the start, the goal was to establish a uniquely Brazilian style of theatrical dance. Working with classically trained ballet dancers, Rodrigo developed his own technique, which fuses Western theatrical dance forms and Afro-Brazilian traditions. The end result incorporates the elegance and discipline of ballet; the freedom and pliancy of modern dance, and the rhythmic complexity of Afro-Brazilian dance.
Grupo Corpo debuted at Stanford Lively Arts two years ago, and caused a sensation with Executive Director Lois Wagner.
Immediately, upon the completion of their performance, we said, "We must have them back!" Wagner recalled. "What a wonderful and exuberant company. There's a freshness, energy and youthfulness with their dancers and choreography. You can't help but leave energized and know what an exciting evening you just had."
Grupo Corpo will perform "Nazareth" and "21" Oct. 15-16 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium on the Stanford University campus. A moderated post-performance discussion on Oct. 15 is free and open to the public.
Tickets are $44/$38/$26. Half-price tickets are available for people aged 15
and under, and discounts are available for students. For tickets and more
information, contact the Stanford Ticket Office at Tresidder Memorial
Union, or call 725-ARTS (2787) or visit livelyarts.stanford.edu.
