Murder trial set to begin Murder trial set to begin (October 22, 2004)

The trial of three San Jose men in the murder of Mountain View resident Doris Condon will begin Monday in San Jose.

Prosecutors say Enrique Chavez and David Olayo broke into Condon's Jardin Avenue home last Oct. 25, hoping to make off with cash and other valuables while Jose Sosa waited in the getaway car. But during the course of break-in, they came across Condon and beat her so badly that she went into a coma and later died from her injuries, according to deputy district attorney Dan Fehderau.

At a preliminary hearing, a day laborer working nearby said he saw Chavez and Olayo enter the home and Sosa waiting in a car around the time of the attack. A trail of orange peels leading from the sidewalk inside Condon's home revealed traces of Olayo's DNA.

If convicted, Chavez would face life without parole, Olayo would serve from 25 years to life, and Sosa would be sentenced to up to nine years.
