Google looking for engineers Google looking for engineers (October 29, 2004)

No plans to outsource, says spokesperson

By Julie O'Shea

Despite a recent trip to India by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the company said it has no plans to outsource jobs. In fact, the Mountain View-based Internet giant has about 100 local job openings.

Spokesperson Debbie Frost said the company is "desperate" for engineers and is "aggressively" looking to fill the vacancies at its Amphitheatre Parkway headquarters as soon as possible.

Google's co-founders recently returned from a four-day trip to southern India where they checked in to see how operations there were going, Frost said. The company is looking for engineers for its office in Bangalore, India, in addition to Mountain View.

"We are excited about our new operation," Frost said. The office in India has been open for about a year.

Company officials thought they could attract more qualified engineers by opening an office in India, Frost said, adding that a person from that country may be interested in working for Google but not with the idea of moving to the United States.

Google is not interested in outsourcing any of its Mountain View operations, Frost continued. Instead, employees in Silicon Valley may find themselves working on projects with engineers in India or at one of the company's other international offices in Japan and Switzerland.

Google has operations in New York and Santa Monica as well. The company's workforce numbered 2,292 employees worldwide this past summer with a majority of those workers located in Mountain View.

On Monday, Google stock surged past its Internet rival Yahoo, closing at $187.40 a share. Its market value is $51.4 billion. Yahoo's is $47.9 billion.
