(November 12, 2004) Why did Democrats not win the presidential election?
Asked in Downtown Mountain View. Pictures and interviews by Huong C. Pham.
"They tried to please too many people. They wanted to compromise without having something real to offer."
Haydee Felsovanyi, Mountain View
"Kerry put so much into the campaign. I was shocked because Kerry had all the votes according to the media, but in reality, the vote says it."
Jose Valencia, Mountain View
"They should have used Clinton's advice earlier as part of their strategy because he's really good at campaigning. Unfortunately, he wasn't a part of the campaign until later on."
Alette Mahler, Los Altos Hills
"First, Kerry was a good candidate but he flipped on the war. Second, the polls showed that most of Bush's supporters were religious. Therefore, issues like stem cells got in the way versus Kerry's supporters who were non-religious."
Johnson R. Hipona, San Jose
"I think [the Democrats] did things pretty well in this election because they were united. However, this election pointed out that the country was divided. Also, the Republicans are good at infrastructure, for instance, getting people to go out and vote.
Padua Padmanabhan, Los Altos
