By Huong C. Pham

Are you considering buying a car or applying for a credit card but aren't sure where to start, what to do or who to ask?

Talk to Michael Finney.

With 25 years of investigative reporting, Finney is a Channel 7 reporter and consumer watchdog for the Bay Area. He will make an appearance at Books Inc. in Mountain View on Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. to promote his book, "Michael Finney's Consumer Confidential."

Mountain View residents will have the opportunity to ask the veteran reporter financial questions at the book signing.

"I'll be there as long as anyone wants to talk to me," said Finney. "Or whenever they kick me out."

Encouraged by fans to write the book, Finney said it took him a year to organize all the facts and data collected over the years by him and his team.

The 237-page paperback is priced at $14.95 and hit bookshelves nationwide Nov. 9. It targets not only adults but also college and high school students, said Finney.

Although the cover of the book promises money-saving tips, Finney said that it is not just about the money.

"It's not about squeezing every penny out of every dollar. It's about being aware and fair," he said. "[The book] talks about stupid credit card tricks and how to protect your privacy, how to negotiate effectively, and there's a large section on insurance. We offer technique across the board."

Finney is also known for his contributions to KGO radio and "7 On Your Side," a program on ABC 7 News, during which he offers consumers financial advice on how to cut through red tape and exposes government and corporate wrongdoing.
