VTA begins rail-grinding project
(November 19, 2004) The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority began a routine, system-wide grinding project on Monday.
According to the VTA, contact of the light rail train wheels on the track gradually causes minor cracking and damage to the rails, resulting in increased noise.
Therefore, grinding the rail smoothes the track surface resulting in reduced noise and an extended life for the track.
The grinding will begin at the intersection of North First Street and Tasman Drive in San Jose, and continue westbound into downtown Mountain View.
The project will take place between 10 p.m. and 4:30 a.m.
Depending on the condition of the track, the rail grinder will complete approximately one and a half to three mile per night, the VTA reported.
Officials estimated that the project will be completed in six weeks.
