NASA computer named 2nd-fastest in the world NASA computer named 2nd-fastest in the world (November 19, 2004)

NASA Ames' newest supercomputer was named one of the most powerful in the world by a Web site, NASA announced.

The Columbia supercomputer, named to honor the crew of the space shuttle Columbia, was ranked second behind Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Blue Gene on the International Conference of High Performance Computing, Networking and Storage's Top500 Web site, which ranks supercomputers, the site reported.

"Large integrated simulation environments like those we have at Ames are crucial to NASA's mission and Columbia has provided a breakthrough increase in our computational power," said G. Scott Hubbard, director of NASA Ames Research Center, in a prepared statement.
