Voices Around Town Voices Around Town (January 14, 2005)

Is it harder to be a kid today than when you were one?

Asked in Downtown Mountain View. Pictures and interviews by Roseanne G. Pereira.

"Yes, given the influences of TV, movies and the Internet that we didn't have growing up."

Cindy Giovannini, Mountain View
"It's not more difficult, it's just different. In my country of Mexico, kids have much more environmental contamination, traffic and violence to deal with."

Memo Herrera, Mountain View
"No, it's nice and easy because when I was a kid, we had more rules and regulations in our family, and financially, it was much harder."

Tracy Hu, Mountain View
"I see that kids are under a lot more pressure, have more activities, but parents are also a lot more accepting of their kids. There's more of a gentleness in how kids are raised now, less stigmas."

Julie Hansen, Mountain View
"It's just different. We used to play outside; now people don't let you. Also, there are more things to grab your attention rather than to be inventive yourself."

Manoj Patel, Mountain View
