Eagles cruise with 2-0 defeat of Homestead
The Los Altos boys soccer team continued its undefeated start to the El Camino Division season with road victories over Homestead and Milpitas.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore Daniel Koehler and junior Darren Sweetman scored in the Eagles' 2-0 defeat of Homestead on Jan. 5.
Sweetman also cemented the team's 2-0 win over Milpitas on Jan. 7 with a second-half score on a penalty kick.
Los Altos (7-2 overall, 3-0 league) plays Los Gatos on Jan. 14.
Los Altos girls notch first win
Despite a winless preseason, the Los Altos girls basketball team began its El Camino Division season with a 43-35 victory at Cupertino on Jan. 5.
Freshman forwards Emily Lippe and Christina Ngo paced the Eagles with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Los Altos then fell to visiting Santa Clara 49-34 on Jan. 7. The Eagles could find no answer for Bruins guard Jacqui Fountain, who scored a game-high 30 points. Lippe's 12 points led the Eagles.
Los Altos (1-11 overall, 1-1 league) hosts Monta Vista on Jan. 14.
Spartans struggle in league play
After a strong preseason, the Mountain View boys soccer team has struggled at the start of De Anza Division play.
The Spartans fell 2-1 to Gunn on Jan. 5. Junior midfielder Payvand Milani chipped in a second-half score for Mountain View.
The host Spartans were then shut out by Monta Vista, 1-0 on Jan. 7.
Mountain View (6-3-3 overall, 1-3 league) plays a competitive Palo Alto team on Jan. 14.
Eagles grapple for points
The Los Altos wrestling team lost its home opener to De Anza Division-leader Los Gatos 54-18 on Jan. 6.
Three Eagle seniors won their individual matches: Fernando Munoz (112-pound weight class), Jarrett Fishpaw (140-pound) and John Armenta (215-pound). And heavyweight Alex Milanovich, a senior in the 275-pound weight class, won his match by forfeit.
Los Altos also participated in the San Ramon Invitational Tournament on Jan. 8. The Eagles finished 10th in a 24-team field, with only six of 12 wrestlers competing.
With four consecutive victories, Munoz won the 112-pound division. Seniors Max Bottaro (152-pound) and Colin Abraham (171-pound) placed second in their divisions.
Los Altos (0-2 league) wrestles in the Clayton Valley Invitational on Jan. 15 and returns to league competition against Palo Alto on Jan. 20.
Lancers' fortunes turn south
The St. Francis girls basketball team, who lost only twice in the preseason, began league play with losses to Mitty and Sacred Heart Prep.
The Lancers fell 68-48 to visiting Mitty on Jan. 5. Junior guard Cynthia Curley, with 14 points including eight free throws, was the only Lancer to score in double digits.
St. Francis fell again in a 58-46 loss to Sacred Heart Prep on Jan. 8. The Gators used a 29-point fourth quarter to run away from the visiting Lancers. Junior center Rebecca Tratter led St. Francis with 13 points.
With no rest for the weary in the West Catholic Athletic League, the Lancers next play the league co-leaders. St. Francis (9-4 overall, 0-2 league) faces Sacred Heart Cathedral on Jan. 14 and then travels to St. Ignatius on Jan. 15.
