Spartans find tougher foes

As the 2003 El Camino Division champions, the Mountain View boys basketball team ascended to the De Anza Division this season where it has found much tougher competition.

Following defeats to Gunn and Homestead, Mountain View lost to Milpitas 57-50 on Jan. 12. The visiting Spartans led by three points entering the fourth quarter but were held to only eight points in the decisive period. Seniors Kevin Harris and Chris Dasalla and junior Terence Willis paced Mountain View with 10 points each.

Mountain View (7-10 overall, 0-3 league) hosts Gunn on Jan. 28.

Eagles notch first league win

The Los Altos boys basketball team notched its first El Camino Division win with a 46-34 victory over Wilcox on Jan. 12.

In defeating the host Chargers, Los Altos turned to its young frontcourt for scoring punch. Sophomore center Brett Perrotta led the Eagles with 14 points, while junior forward Richard Rullo (6-3) chipped in 12.

But the Eagles couldn't sustain their winning ways as they fell to Monta Vista 48-43 at home on Jan. 15. Perrotta scored a game-high 13 points in the loss.

Los Altos (7-11 overall, 1-3 league) plays Lynbrook on Jan. 26.

Lancers bounce back

After a rough start to its regular season, the St. Francis girls basketball team responded with victories over Valley Christian and St. Ignatius and a close loss to league-leading Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Junior guard Cynthia Curley scored 16 points to lead the host Lancers to a 62-42 win over Valley Christian on Jan. 12.

St. Francis fell 47-40 to visiting Sacred Heart Cathedral on Jan. 14, but held the Fightin' Irish to its season-low point total and its smallest margin of victory in league play.

The Lancers rebounded the next night to post their first West Catholic Athletic League road win by defeating St. Ignatius 58-54 in overtime. Junior center Rebecca Tratter and Curley each scored 14 points to lead the Lancers.

St. Francis (11-5 overall, 2-3 league) visits Notre Dame-Belmont on Jan. 22.

Damm leads Spartans

The Mountain View girls soccer team continued to justify its promotion to the De Anza Division this season with a 2-1 victory over Homestead on Jan. 10. The Spartans benefited from the strong play of junior midfielder Abby Damm, the team leader in assists who notched two more in setting up both goals.

Mountain View then suffered its first league loss, falling 1-0 to league-leading Palo Alto on Jan. 14.

Mountain View (4-5-3 overall, 2-1-3 league) hosts Los Gatos on Jan. 21 in a rematch of an earlier 1-1 tie.

Lancer girls undefeated in league

The St. Francis girls soccer team continued its undefeated run in West Catholic Athletic League play with three victories in four days.

The Lancers blanked Sacred Heart Cathedral 5-0 on Jan. 12 and Valley Christian 2-0 the next afternoon. They then took a 3-2 victory over Notre Dame-Belmont on Jan. 15.

St. Francis (8-1-5 overall, 6-0-2 league) visits St. Ignatius on Jan. 22.
