Lancers split tough games

The St. Francis boys basketball team needed an overtime period to finish off the West Catholic Athletic League's cellar-dweller, but nearly upended the league's front-runner.

Senior guard Brady Fuerst, who finished with 15 points and three 3-pointers, helped the visiting Lancers stave off pesky Bellarmine, 56-54, in an extra period on Jan. 18.

Host St. Francis overcame a five-point deficit entering the final period against league heavyweight Serra on Jan. 21 and took the lead. But the Lancers allowed the Padres two late baskets and eventually fell 44-43. Senior guard James Bisordi led the Lancers with 16 points.

St. Francis (10-9 overall, 3-4 league) visits Riordan on Jan. 28 in a rematch of an earlier three-point Crusader victory.

Spartans post first league win

After a rough welcome to the De Anza Division, the Mountain View boys basketball team notched its first league win this season.

The host Spartans, paced by junior swingman Terence Willis' 19 points, defeated Los Gatos 54-45 on Jan. 18.

But Mountain View fell back to earth against a strong Fremont team, losing 80-54 against the visiting Firebirds on Jan. 21.

The Spartans (8-11 overall, 1-4 league) host Gunn on Jan. 28.

Eagles man the mat

Despite being undermanned, the Los Altos wrestling team continued its strong showings in tournaments. Among a field of 28 teams, the Eagles earned the third-place trophy in the Albany Invitational Tournament on Jan. 22, even though they competed in only eight of the 14 weight classes.

Seniors Fernando Munoz (112-pound division) and Jarrett Fishpaw (140-pound) each posted four wins and no losses to win their respective divisions.

The Eagles visit Wilcox on Feb. 2 and host Monta Vista on Feb. 10.

Spartan girls stuff Los Altos

In a crosstown girls basketball game, Mountain View easily handled visiting Los Altos, winning 57-43 on Jan. 19.

The Spartans (8-7 overall, 3-2 league) won each of the first three quarters decisively, pushing their lead to 44-26 at the start of the final period. Senior forward Michelle Peng scored a game-high 20 points for Mountain View in this El Camino Division contest.

Freshman forwards Emily Lippe and Christina Ngo led the Eagles with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Mountain View, in a three-way tie for second place in the division, then took a 54-50 road win over Fremont. Freshman post player Angelica Williams led the Spartans with 19 points.

Los Altos (1-14 overall, 1-4 league) hosts winless Cupertino on Jan. 28, while Mountain View travels to undefeated Wilcox on Jan. 29.

Eagles stay strong

The Los Altos boys soccer team continued its strong season with a 4-1 win over visiting Wilcox in an El Camino Division contest on Jan. 19.

Senior midfielder Jose Luis Abarca-Martinez scored two goals, and junior forward Darren Sweetman posted a goal and an assist for the Eagles. Los Altos was the only team to score in the first half.

Los Altos (9-3-1 overall, 5-1-1 league) hosts Milpitas on Jan. 18.
