St. Francis stopped in semifinals

Spurred by first-half goals from Ali Kompanian and Tim Bredehoeft, St. Francis defeated Valley Christian 2-0 in the first round of the West Catholic Athletic League soccer playoffs.

St. Francis, coming off shutout wins over Riordan and Sacred Heart Cathedral, stretched its unbeaten streak to four games. In this Feb. 5 match, the host Lancers exhibited great ball control and allowed the Warriors only two shots.

St. Francis (9-7-6) lost to Bellarmine, the winner of 13 consecutive league titles, in the semifinals, 2-1, on Feb. 8.

Lancer girls still in the hunt

With designs on an eventual Central Coast Section championship, the St. Francis girls soccer team began its postseason with a dominant statement. In a quarterfinal match in the WCAL playoffs, the host Lancers overwhelmed Sacred Heart Prep 6-0 on Feb. 5.

Lancer junior forward Sarah Doyle led the attack with three goals. Sophomore Elle Meulman contributed two assists and a goal of her own.

St. Francis (15-1-6) beat Valley Christian 2-0 in the league semifinals on Feb. 8.

Eagles keep playoff hopes alive

The Los Altos boys basketball team continued its playoff push with victories over Wilcox and Monta Vista.

The Eagles defeated Wilcox 69-54 at home on Feb. 1. Late-season addition Kevin Riley, a senior forward, scored a game-high 20 points.

In stretching its winning streak to three games, Los Altos beat Monta Vista 56-46 on Feb. 4. Junior point guard Matt Favaro paced the Eagles with 16 points.

Los Altos (11-14 overall, 5-5 league) needs a win at Lynbrook in its regular season finale on Feb. 15 to have a chance at postseason play.

Spartans on a tear

With the playoffs looming next week, the Mountain View boys are playing their best soccer of the season.

The Spartans defeated visiting Fremont 2-0 in a De Anza Division contest on Feb. 2. Forwards Jeovani Rodrigues and Jesus Acosta each scored as Mountain View won for the fifth time in seven games.

Led by senior goalkeeper David Ronconi, the Spartans have allowed only three goals in their past eight games.

Mountain View (11-4-4 overall, 6-4-1 league) was scheduled to finish its season against Palo Alto on Feb. 9.

MV girls pushing to the end

With its sights set on at least a share of second place in the El Camino Division and a postseason invitation, the Mountain View girls basketball team is looking to end its regular season with a strong run.

The Spartans defeated visiting Monta Vista 47-31 on Feb. 2. Senior forward Michelle Peng scored a team-high 15 points.

With the playoff spots still up for grabs, the Spartans (12-11 overall, 5-4 league) host Fremont on Feb. 11 and visit Cupertino on Feb. 16.

Byrnes, Descalso to be honored

Former St. Francis baseball standouts Eric Byrnes (Class of 1994) and Daniel Descalso (Class of 2004) are to be among the honorees at the 21st annual Santa Clara County Baseball Fundraisers Hot Stove Banquet on Feb. 10. The event recognizes athletes who have played in Santa Clara County.

Byrnes, an outfielder for the Oakland Athletics, is the major league player of the year. Descalso, a freshman infielder/pitcher for UC-Davis, is the high school player of the year.

Youth water polo

Los Altos Youth Water Polo is kicking off its spring season on Feb. 10 at Los Altos High School. Practices will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m., with games on the weekends.
