Arrest in '95 rape case Arrest in '95 rape case (March 11, 2005)

DNA database catches Redwood City man

Mountain View police have arrested a suspect in a 1995 rape using DNA evidence taken from the scene and cross-referenced with the profiles of nearly 300,000 convicted felons, according to Sgt. Derek Sousa.

Darrick Wyliemoore Lee, 35, of Redwood City, was arrested March 3 and booked into Santa Clara County jail.

Lee was recently paroled from prison for evading a police officer and driving under the influence, according to Sousa.

DNA evidence taken from the scene of a Sept. 2, 1995 rape at an apartment complex located at 505 Cypress Point Drive was sent to the California Department of Justice Forensic Services in 2003.

Earlier this year, the evidence was matched to Lee during a cross-search of the profiles of convicted felons.

Lee allegedly entered the female victim's residence through an unlocked sliding glass door and forcibly raped her, Sousa said.

The rape occurred during a time when police were investigating a serial rapist along the Peninsula who was later identified as Romel Reid.

Reid was sentenced to 56 years in state prison following a 23-count indictment handed down from a grand jury.

Records show another rape occurred in the same Mountain View apartment complex on Jan. 9, 1996. Detectives could not comment on whether Lee is a suspect in that rape. -- Bay City News
