Leaders in training

Two students from Los Altos High School participated in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. last week. Juniors Miranda Friedman of Mountain View and Tessa Ameri of Los Altos were among 400 students from around the country participating in the conference.

NYCL is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit.

Throughout the conference, students interacted with people who operate within the three branches of government, the news media and the international community. In addition to attending scheduled meetings, students also had the opportunity to participate in leadership skill-building activities and simulations.

The conference culminated with Model Congress, a program which allowed students to assume the roles of U. S. Representatives, debate, amend and vote on proposed mock legislation.

Arbor Day on March 12

Arbor Day is March 12 this year, and the city of Mountain View has a big celebration planned at Pionner Memorial Park at 1146 Church St. A reading program will kick off the day at the Mountain View Public Library and festivities will continue in the park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a tree planting ceremony at 11:15 a.m.

There will be free activities to enjoy as well, including children's arts and crafts, face painting and a complimentary hot dog and drink. For more information call 903-6273.

MV residents turn 100

Two longtime Mountain View residents turned 100 on March 8.

Juan De Dios Cabello and Hortencia Ramirez both had birthdays this week.

De Dios Cabello was born in Mexico and raised in Texas and was roping and raising cattle by the time he was 7. He later worked in mines and railroads, and in 1949, moved to Mountain View with his wife, Loretta and son Ruben. He is a member of Saint Joseph's parish and still attends Mass every day.

Ramirez was born in Clifton, Ariz. She and her husband moved to Mountain View in 1945. Ramirez has six children, 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and 13 great, great grandchildren.

Her family is throwing her a birthday party on March 12 at the Adobe Hall on Moffett Boulevard from 4 to 9 p.m. The family is expecting at least 100 people will show up to help celebrate.
