Spartans toss perfect game

Not only does the Mountain View softball team have an unblemished record, it now has a perfect game to add to its resume.

Two pitchers, Kendra Vanek and Liz Gizst, combined to throw five spotless innings as the Spartans walloped Menlo-Atherton 14-0 at home on March 10.

For the second time in a week, Mountain View (3-0) forced the early end to a game by streaking to a lead of ten or more runs after the fifth inning.

The Spartans opened the game with five hits on the way to four quick runs in the first inning. Led by Alicia Olmos, who went 3-for-3 with three runs and a walk, Mountain View struck for another four runs in the third inning and then six more in the fourth.

Two days earlier, the host Spartans used 10 hits and Vanek's eight strikeouts to defeat Mercy-Burlingame 11-1 in six innings.

Mountain View plays in the Charlie Miguel Tournament at Mission College on March 18-19 before hosting Monta Vista in a De Anza Division game on March 22.

Eagle boys trounce Paly

The Los Altos boys track-and-field team began its De Anza Division season with an 89-38 road victory over Palo Alto on March 10.

The Eagles (1-0) won 12 of the 15 events, sweeping both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay events. Los Altos fell only in the 100 and 200-meter races and the discus competition.

Sophomore Eric Hersey was among the top individual performers with victories in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

The Los Altos girls (0-1) failed to enjoy the same success as the boys, falling 100-26 to a tough Palo Alto squad. Despite having many team members set personal records, the Eagles' sole triumph on the afternoon was senior Daphne Owen's victory in the 800-meter race.

The Eagles visit Milpitas as league competition continues on March 24.

MV track teams victorious

Both Mountain View track-and-field teams defeated Saratoga in the opening meet of the El Camino Division season at home on March 10.

The boys (1-0) prevailed 86-40, winning 11 of the 15 events. Alex Adams (200-meter and 110-meter high hurdles) and Justin Bull (high, long and triple jumps) led the Spartans.

The Spartans girls (1-0) found similar success, defeating the Falcons 81-46. Kate Kornegay won both hurdle events, and Roni Amsden placed first in the high and long jumps.

Mountain View competes in the West Valley Relays on March 19 and in the Stanford Invitational on March 25-26 before resuming league play at home against Monta Vista on March 31.

Spartans lead on the links

The Mountain View boys golf team used a strong week of play in the De Anza Division to remain undefeated.

Led by Tyler Ichikawa's 1-under 34, the Spartans began the week by defeating Homestead 186-202 at Sunnyvale Muni (par 35) on March 7.

In a four-team competition at Shoreline (par 36) on March 9, Mountain View took top honors with a score of 190 while Los Altos came in second place with 203. Homestead and Cupertino finished with scores of 205 and 252, respectively.

Cameron Showecker shot an even-par round to pace the Spartans. Only one of the team's five members finished above 38. Charles Sines (37) and Andrew Kaneshiro (38) led the Eagles.

Mountain View (7-0) and Los Altos (3-3) meet again at Shoreline on March 23 in a competition that includes Gunn and Menlo.
