(March 25, 2005) Spartans start out strong in the pool
The Mountain View swimming and diving teams looked strong in their season-opening victories at Saratoga on March 18.
The boys (1-0 league) won eight of the 11 events in this De Anza Division meet, defeating the Falcons 99-79.
The Spartans were led by seniors Tyler Landrith (100 and 200y freestyle) and Fred Tran (100y butterfly and 100y backstroke), who each nailed two first-place finishes. The two seniors also combined with sophomore Justin Kenerva and junior Brian Bishop to wins in the 200 and 400y. freestyle relays.
The Spartan girls (1-0 league) placed first and second in seven events to beat Saratoga 100-78.
Sophomore Becca Koch won the 100y freestyle and placed second in the 200y freestyle. Freshman Rachel Rossi was runner-up to Koch in the 100y freestyle and won the 50y freestyle.
Mountain View visits Los Altos in a league meet on March 29.
Eagle baseball closes in on first win
Three games into its De Anza Division season, the Los Altos baseball team has yet to win a game. However, its strong showing against defending league champion Wilcox gives the Eagles hope that a victory may be just around the corner.
After surrendering a grand slam and five runs total in the top of the first inning, Los Altos came back with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. The host Eagles came within a run of the Chargers twice but ultimately fell 7-6. Senior Troy Haury led Los Altos with three hits, including two doubles.
The Eagles (0-6 overall, 0-3 league) will visit Los Gatos on March 25 and play in the Monterey Tournament at Carmel on March 26-28.
Lancer baseball stays dominant
The St. Francis baseball team began its title defense with a 5-2 win over host Valley Christian to open its West Catholic Athletic League season.
The Lancers, winners of the past three league crowns, spotted the Warriors a 2-0 second-inning lead but scored in four of the last five innings to secure the victory. Chris Coleman led St. Francis with a home run and a double, while Brady Fuerst had two hits and two RBIs.
After a season-opening loss to Soquel, the Lancers (8-1 overall, 1-0 league) have now won eight consecutive games.
St. Francis plays Pittsburgh in the opening round of the West Coast Classic at Wilcox on March 29 and returns to league play at Bellarmine on April 5.
Local tennis teams notch more victories
The Los Altos boys tennis team continued its impressive start in the upper De Anza Division, defeating Los Gatos 4-3 on March 17. In winning this tight match, the host Eagles (4-1 league) handed the Wildcats their first league loss.
Mountain View, competing in the lower El Camino Division, recorded two shutouts last week. The Spartans (5-1 league) posted 7-0 road victories over Fremont and Milpitas on March 15 and 17, respectively.
Los Altos visits Cupertino on March 31, and Mountain View hosts Homestead on March 29.
Warmbrodt leads Spartans in close game
Mountain View lost its second consecutive De Anza Division baseball game, falling 3-2 at Milpitas on March 16.
Despite the all-around excellence of Jon Warmbrodt, who threw a complete game and hit a solo home run, the Spartans couldn't hold their 2-0 lead. The Trojans scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Mountain View (2-2 overall, 1-2 league) hosts division leader Wilcox on March 25.
