Eagles set for section track finals

The Los Altos track and field team continued its strong season with solid performances in the CCS semifinals at San Jose City College on May 21.

The Eagles' 4x400-meter boys relay team, fresh off its dynamic win at the SCVAL Qualifiers, finished sixth in the preliminaries and earned a berth in the finals.

Los Altos senior Jeff Clark and sophomore Eric Hersey also advanced. Clark placed third in the high jump, tying a season-best at 6-4, and also took fifth in both the long jump and triple jump. Hersey placed fifth in both the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.

Eagles sophomore Bria Nelson advanced in the 400-meter (4th) and 200-meter (7th). Both Los Altos girls relay teams ran well and advanced to the finals. The 4x400-meter team finished fifth, while the 4x100-meter squad placed seventh.

The CCS finals take place at Los Gatos on May 27.

Spartans wrap track season

Mountain View was on the cusp of sending numerous athletes to the CCS track finals, but found itself on the outside looking in when the semifinals came to an end.

With the top eight finishers in the preliminaries advancing to the finals in all but the two long distance events, numerous Spartans narrowly missed making the field.

Sophomore Roni Amsden had a pair of tenth-place finishes, in the high jump and long jump, as well as taking 12th in the triple jump. Senior Jane Doolittle placed 11th in the high jump and two sophomores, Kate Kornegay and Robbie Reid, finished 10th in the 100-meter hurdles and 800-meter, respectively.

The boys' 4x400-meter relay team also came in 10th in 3:30.27.

SF's Bramlett snags CCS title on golf course

St. Francis junior Joe Bramlett continues to pile up the awards thanks to his remarkable play on the golf course.

Bramlett won a sudden-death playoff on May 17 to take medalist honors in the CCS boys golf championships. He and Saratoga's Shaun Pienkos both recorded 4-under-par rounds of 67 at Carmel's Rancho Canada West, forcing a playoff that Bramlett won on the second hole.

The St. Francis team finished in fourth place with a score of 375, 17 strokes behind co-champions Bellarmine and Serra. Junior Chris Jensen shot a 69 to advance along with Bramlett to the individual Northern California Golf Association High School Championships.

Bramlett again topped the field, winning the NCGA/CIF individual title.

The two Lancers qualified for the CIF State Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course on June 8.

Bramlett withdrew from the State Championship field in favor of competing at the U.S. Open Sectionals in Colorado on June 6-7.

Lancer gymnasts take 6th straight CCS crown

The St. Francis gymnastics team won an unprecedented sixth consecutive CCS championship with its performance at Mountain View's Twisters Gym on May 20.

The Lancers scored 189.675 points, nudging runner-up Aragon, which finished with 183.800.

St. Francis equaled Gunn's run of five straight titles with its 2004 championship and had been gunning for sole possession of the record. The Lancers have now won 10 of the 30 championships since the competition began in 1976.

St. Francis junior Linda Lund won the individual all-around title with a score of 39.025. Lund placed first among 61 athletes in the vault with a 9.750.

Her teammates Sara Silano (6th) and Wendy Shue (10th) helped the Lancers round out the top ten.

St. Francis, undefeated for the sixth consecutive year as well, showed its depth and domination by winning the team competition in each of the four exercises.
