Stasek to show slides of Afghan adventure
(July 08, 2005) By Jenny Baer
@text She's back.
Former Mountain View Mayor Rosemary Stasek has returned from her trip to Afghanistan, and is inviting local residents to see a slide show of her trip at City Hall.
The presentation will cover Stasek's past six months spent as the logistics manager for the Kabul beauty school in Afghanistan. She states that "living above a beauty parlor in Kabul is a unique experience."
Stasek will be covering topics on the current political situation in Afghanistan, but will primarily focus on aspects of living and working in the country. "I think the public will see Afghanistan in a way they don't see in the media," Stasek said. "The media covers so little about Afghanistan. We don't hear about it in the news anymore but I think that people are still interested, especially with the issues that Afghan women are still facing."
Stasek has taken a total five trips to Afghanistan, and presented a public slideshow after each one. "I do speaking engagements all the time when I'm home," she said, "but the ones in City Hall are very special because those are the ones that I do for the community at large." While on her most recent trip to Afghanistan, she wrote a regular column for the Voice titled "Letter from Kabul." In her last installment, Stasek worried that she was in physical danger, "not because of bombings or kidnappings, but because I'm now driving." The sight of a woman driving a car, she said, is still enough to incite Afghan men to violence.
Stasek's presentation will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 13 in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.
