Spartan girls start season spiking
If not for those pesky West Catholic Athletic League schools, the Mountain View girls volleyball team would have yet to lose a game.
Thanks largely to their 2nd-place showing in the Silver Division of the Milpitas Spikefest, the Spartans started their season with a record of 4-3.
After a four-game win over Monta Vista on Sept. 1, Mountain View began its busy day in Milpitas two days later.
The Spartans defeated King City and Menlo before losing to Mitty in the round robin. In the Silver Division playoffs, Mountain View earned a rare win over rival Los Altos before falling to Presentation in the final.
"The Los Altos win was a great victory for these girls," said Spartans coach Gerrie Phillips, whose seniors enjoyed their first victory over the Eagles.
Mountain View put up a good challenge to host Valley Christian on Sept. 6, but fell in four games, 25-23, 25-17, 24-26, 25-15.
The Spartans next host Independence on Sept. 14.
Eagles water polo girls tearing up the pool
@text The Los Altos girls water polo team began the season with a splash and has yet to slow down.
The Eagles could not have asked for a better start than their 6-3 win over St. Francis on Sept. 2. Behind 3 goals from sophomore attacker Carey Wong and 8 saves by sophomore goalie Cassie Wyckoff, Los Altos posted a convincing win over the Lancers, who have played in seven consecutive CCS title games.
Continuing play in the Peninsula Challenge at Castilleja the next day, the Eagles defeated Gunn 16-6 and San Mateo 20-1, before falling to Aragon 6-5.
The Eagles rounded out their impressive five-day run by defeating Castilleja 7-6 at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center on Sept. 6.
"It's been great so far, above my expectations," said Los Altos coach Travis Wyckoff.
Next, the Eagles (4-1) welcome Mountain View, among other teams, to the Los Altos Invitational on Sept. 8-10.
