Avenidas to dedicate new senior center
Avenidas will unveil its new Senior Day Health Center this week with a private dinner on Friday and a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m.
The new center on Escuela Avenue, right next to the new city senior center now under construction, was funded in large part by a $2 million donation from the Rose and Eugene Kleiner Foundation. It will serve about 70 seniors each day, most attending two or three days a week. Under an agreement with the city, 40 percent of the participants will be Mountain View residents.

Day workers plan rummage sale
The Day Worker Center at the Calvary Church is planning a rummage sale for Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to raise money for continued operations. Director Maria Marroquin said that workers will be selling furniture, books, clothes and other donated items.
Monday, the worker-run center held a celebration in honor of the 14 members who completed Red Cross CPR and First Aid training in the month of September. Passerbys stopped to watch as workers danced and ate Jalisco-style pozole and a Peruvian potato dish, and Marroquin called up workers individually to give them certificates.
Marroquin said it was important to her to recognize the workers who got certified. "The workers want to be part of the solution," she said.

La Avenida changing configuration
Construction at the Highway 85/101 interchange will shut down La Avenida to eastbound traffic starting next week.
The change, to accommodate the new Shoreline Boulevard off-ramp, will permanently turn La Avenida east of Shoreline into a one-way street. Microsoft, the Computer History Museum and the VTA will will be accessd via a newly constructed road connecting La Avenida and Pear Avenue. The road is scheduled to be named at next week's city council meeting.
To access La Avenida, traffic heading northbound on Shoreline Boulevard should turn right on Pear Avenue and right on the new road. Southbound Shoreline Boulevard traffic should turn left on Pear Avenue and right on the new road.
