MV boys water polo eyes another title

Mountain View's water polo squad has enjoyed a strong season opener as it works to defend the 2004 El Camino Division Championship.

After beginning the league schedule with back-to-back victories over Fremont and Lynbook, Mountain View enjoyed an undefeated run through the Independence Tournament on Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

In winning the Red Division Championship, the Spartans (7-2, 2-0 El Camino) knocked off Watsonville and host Independence, followed up with another victory over Lynbrook and then posted a 10-7, title-game win against Pioneer.

Returning El Camino MVP Brian Bishop, a senior hole set, is again starring for Mountain View, while sophomore hole set Spencer Fletcher and junior driver Matt Ives also played important roles.

Lancers top Eagles in field hockey tourney

St. Francis and Los Altos traveled quite a ways to meet for the second time this season. The teams advanced through pool play at the Davis Mid-Season Field Hockey Classic to face each other in the championship game.

The Lancers prevailed, defeating Los Altos 2-0 on Oct. 1 behind goals from Stephani Byrne and Ali Reedy. The teams squared off in the season opener with St. Francis winning 4-0 on Sept. 1.

Los Altos senior Caitlin Ferrel was named top defensive player and junior Sarah Lytle made the all-tournament team. Meanwhile, St. Francis' Byrne, a sophomore, took home top-offensive-player honors. Seniors Kathryn Kamenski and Ashley Nucera and junior Soula Ellenikiotis were named to the all-tournament team.
