Macias doubtful over pot club idea
(October 21, 2005) By Jon Wiener
Last week's city council decision to study the possibility of opening a medical marijuana dispensary in Mountain View may wind up being a hollow victory for Jonathan Lustig and his supporters.
Council member Laura Macias, who missed last week's meeting with an arm injury, said she was unlikely to support any rule change that allowed a pot club to open in the city.
"I'd have to be severely persuaded that it's a good thing for Mountain View," Macias said.
Before voting to commit the pot club idea to a study session, the council split 3-3 on whether to delay the issue until Macias returned. Supporters had hoped that she would weigh in on their side, while those against the idea were content to let it drop.
A vote even to delay the issue looked unlikely until council member Tom Means, who said that marijuana should only be sold in pharmacies, changed sides and voted to hold a study session to learn more about that possibility.
