Calling all historians

Slater School, which is celebrating its 50th birthday and is set to close at the end of the school year, is in search of any and all pieces of its history from the community. Principal Nicki Smith, along with parents, teachers and students, are starting a timeline of the school's 50-year history -- a project beginning with a special potluck dinner event on Thursday, Nov. 10.

The timeline is part of an effort to honor the school's past while looking ahead to the students' future. A memory box will sit in Slater's front office throughout the year, so that anyone with articles, pictures or other information about Slater's alumni, traditions and history may contribute to the timeline project. All submissions are welcome. Contributors may also e-mail information to Smith at nsmith@mvwsd.k12.ca.us or call (650) 526-3530.

Landels principal to finish out the year

The Mountain View-Whisman School District has more time to search for a new Landels Elementary School principal, now that interim Principal Jerry Davis has signed on for the entire 2005-06 school year.

Davis had come out of retirement after 34 years of teaching in the Campbell Unified School District to fill in at Landels because Principal Alicia Henderson moved over to Graham Middle School.

Originally, Davis had agreed to serve as principal through Halloween while Mountain View-Whisman administrators sought a new person to fill Henderson's shoes. However, at Superintendent Maurice Ghysels' request, Davis has now committed to finishing out the year.

"It's such a great school and I'm happy to be here," Davis said.

School officials are grateful for Davis' willingness to step in and serve the district while they find the right person for the position.

"Mr. Davis, students, staff and community are working very well together, and this will provide us time to look for a principal this spring for next school year," Ghysels said. "For Mr. Davis to remain at Landels is a testament to Landels' success." -- Molly Tanenbaum
