Education writer comes to Graham Education writer comes to Graham (January 06, 2006)

Denise Clark Pope, an author and Stanford School of Education lecturer, will come to the Graham Middle School Auditorium on Jan. 11, to discuss her book, “Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students.”

In the book, Pope examines the stress level of five high-achieving, upper-middle class suburban high-schoolers. Her study concluded that the overscheduled, stressed-out students were “doing school” as a path toward grades and college admission, rather than pursuing school as a learning experience.

During the talk, hosted by Mountain View’s Bubb School PTA, Pope plans to highlight the effect of Bay Area views of "success" on the education of local youth. She will also address how these pressures can be minimized by parents, students and educators.

The free event runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and will include translation in Spanish.
