@ newitem:MVLA re-registering every student

In an effort to ensure that all of its students are indeed residents of the district, the Mountain View-Los Altos High School District has begun the process of re-registering every pupil, officials announced.

That process began with re-registering the junior class on Jan. 4 and 5. So far, according to Associate Superintendent Brigitte Sarraf, less than a third of the 3,600 parents who must register their kids have done so. But there are six more registration days coming up, and Sarraf's office will also be open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday for parents to come by with the necessary paperwork.

The district estimates that about 100 students are currently enrolled at MVLA who live outside of the district, and eliminating them could potentially save $1 million, to be used for expanding programs and services, according to a November letter to parents from Superintendent Rich Fischer.

"The savings will enhance and improve programs and services for students who legitimately live in our district," Sarraf said.

The upcoming re-registration dates -- all from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the cafeterias of both high schools -- are as follows: sophomores on Jan. 25 and 26; freshmen on Feb. 15 and 16, and 8th graders (incoming freshmen) on March 7 and 8. A Saturday make-up will be held on March 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the district office.

For more information, and a list of the necessary paperwork to validate residency in the district, call Sarraf's office at (650) 940-4654, or visit www.mvla.net and click on "News." -- Molly Tanenbaum

Superintendent search begins

The Mountain View-Los Altos High School District announced on Dec. 9 that a search firm has been hired to begin looking for Rich Fischer's replacement. In November, after nine years as superintendent for MVLA, Fischer announced his plans to retire at the end of this school year.

The firm, Leadership Associates, is the same California firm the district used to find Fischer, and will be accepting applications for the position through mid-March. In early February, the district will hold public meetings to gather community input on the search process, which should result in the hire of a new superintendent to begin work by the end of April. -- Molly Tanenbaum
