A 17-year-old Hispanic male was shot to death on the 100 block of Higdon Avenue on Tuesday evening, police said. Currently no witnesses have been found, and police have little to go on.
On Wednesday morning, police identified the victim as Jose Merales, a Mountain View resident.
The shooting took place at about 6 p.m., police said. Police spokesperson Liz Wylie said detectives have no reason to believe the shooting was gang-related, but haven't ruled it out either.
Police don't know whether the victim was walking by or hanging out in front of the house, or if he knew his killer. Anyone with any information on the crime can call the Mountain View police tip line at (650) 903-6344.
This is the second homicide in Mountain View this month, the first being the shooting of Jeffrey Johnson, 20, on Feb. 7. Previously there had been just one other homicide since 2005: the Sept. 23, 2007 murder of Rene Escalante, 24, at Whisman Park on the 300 block of Easy Street. That incident was not gang-related.
