El Camino Hospitals now smoke-free zones

El Camino Hospitals — there are two of them now, one in Mountain View and one in Los Gatos — have officially become smoke-free zones thanks to a board resolution to eliminate all designated smoking areas there.

The resolution, passed by the board of directors last September, came into effect on July 1. Tobacco is now banned from all hospital facilities and grounds.

"We are committed to the health and safety of our patients and staff," said Ken Graham, El Camino Hospital's CEO, in a press release. "As health care providers, it is essential that we model healthy behaviors. While we recognize how difficult it is to quit smoking, we want to provide a safe and healthy environment which encourages positive health choices."

The hospital is providing resources for staff who want to kick the habit. Community members can also receive help quitting through the Cardiac and Pulmonary Wellness Center by calling (650) 940-7130.

Interesting that El Camino Hospital's no smoking policy went into effect and just this morning (7/6) one of the construction workers was torching one up in the parking lot as I walked by with my dogs. Seems they need to pass the information on to their contractors.

Anybody notice any decline in respiratory ailments since this anti-smoking nonsense started back in 1985? No? I thought not. You can get away from my cigarette smoke, but I can't get away from the microwave bath that enables your silly cell phones...

Ever since smoking has declined in the U.S., heart disease and lung cancer have dropped off precipitously. There is no debate on this.

That said, I think they should just outlaw smoking altogether or leave us adults alone to make our own decisions. No smoking in bars? Dumb.

I don't drive. What gives you the right to pollute my lungs for your convenience?
