A Mountain View teen was beaten and robbed in the early hours of Halloween at Theuerkauf Elementary School, police said.

The 17-year-old was going to meet up with some friends on the school grounds at about midnight between Oct. 30 and Oct. 31, Mountain View police spokeswoman Liz Wylie said.

When the victim arrived at the school he encountered a group of three young men, Wylie said. The young men hit the victim multiple times and demanded his wallet, which he gave to them. The 17-year-old lost $20 in the robbery and suffered minor injuries.

He declined medical attention, Wylie said.

  1. Do you know why police officers will invariably ask you to come over and talk to them if you are out on the streets that late, no matter who you are? It’s because the likelihood is very high that if you are out that late, you may be up to no good. I never mind it, on the rare occasions it might happen to me, because I understand the job that they do. So, the moral to the story is…Stay inside when it gets to the wee hours, or you may suffer the same fate. It’s a different world out there when it gets that late, and the old saying is very true of “the freaks come out at night”. Don’t be out when they are, and you won’t get hurt.

  2. Good advice, The Eye. I’ll continue to cower in my home during those hours since this appears to happen very frequently (to maybe one or two people a month in our city of 70K+).

  3. As some of you may know, Palo Alto has experienced quite a few robberies in the last few months. This should serve as a lesson to the residents in MV. Venturing into places where is a chance of risk at dark shows stupidity. Parents need to advice their children (yes, even a 17 year old is a child) to be aware. Withdrawing money from ATMs in uncrowded places at odd hours is plain old stupid.

  4. Might be because I’m in my 50’s, but this kid had no business being out at midnight. Especially hanging out on a school playground. Midnight? Really parents?

  5. So the consensus so far is that he deserved to be beaten and robbed? Really? Sure we don’t have all the facts but based on this report I’m going to put the blame on the 3 young men who dished out the beating and robbery.

  6. Yes yes, all of you should live in fear and never go out after dark. If you do you’ll be swept up in a post apocalyptic whirlwind of violent crime. Then a bunch of know it all know nothings with 20/20 hindsight will say more or less say “you brought this on yourself”

I haven’t given up on my town, even after dark. I don’t live in fear and I don’t hide inside. So far so good for me, but feel free to cower inside when the sun goes down; more room for me.

  7. All these comments are probably from the same ppl who voted for Obama….

  8. Obviously the prior comment was made by a Sarah Palin wanna be. With an IQ to match hers. After all, she can see Russia from her backyard.

  9. Hmmmm, I live right across the street and am saddened but not surprised by the attack. The school and park are the only places for hanging out in the neighborhood…and it’s also a space that’s easy to hide from others. Is there a more proactive way we can keep our community safer? In this neighborhood, report roaming groups who may or may not be at loose ends with nothing to do, report tagging immediately, and if someone is at the school past sports hours and past time when dog owners are out with their pet call the PD.
