Man wearing ski mask attempts armed robbery on Hamilton Avenue

Palo Alto police arrested a man early this morning who may be responsible for five unsolved robberies in Palo Alto and several others nearby, a police spokesman said today.

The arrest stemmed from an incident on Hamilton Avenue late Monday night. Several people were sitting on the side of the road on Hamilton when a man wearing a ski mask and holding a handgun approached them and demanded money, police said. The victims said they were not from the area and did not have any money, and the robber let them go, police said. The people quickly drove off and called police, and officers soon set up a perimeter on Hamilton, Sgt. Wayne Benitez said.

Police saw a man walking down Hamilton wearing latex gloves and detained him, police said. Near where they detained him they discovered a ski mask and a fake handgun, and the man then reportedly admitted to several of Palo Alto's unsolved armed robberies.

Police arrested the man, an East Palo Alto resident. Detectives have been working through the night and more information will be released later today.
