County sees drop in Memorial Day DUI arrests

Drunken driving arrests down from 2011 over three-day weekend

DUI arrests over the Memorial Day holiday weekend were down in Santa Clara County compared to the same three-day weekend last year, authorities said Tuesday.

The county saw a sharp drop, from 144 drunken driving arrests last year to 80 this year, according to California AVOID, which runs multi-agency anti-DUI enforcement campaigns in each Bay Area county over various holiday weekends.

Officers reported making five drunken-driving arrests in Mountain View over the long weekend.

The holiday crackdown lasted until the end of the night on Monday. AVOID programs will return with increased patrols and DUI checkpoints for the Independence Day holiday, according to officials.

That's because the number of illegal immigrants is on the decline.

Good to hear the number of arrests is down. Hopefully this means the amount of drunk driving is down too.

Just curious: has anyone here ever been stopped in a DUI checkpoint? I have never even seen one.

I've been stopped at DUI Checkpoints in the past. Nothing recently though.

I read someplace that Santa Clara County was using their resources to increase patrols. Recent studies have shown that checkpoints are not very effective. Police have a better chance of catching drunks behind the wheel if they are actually driving around the community.

I think the whole thing is a waste of money but I really hate the checkpoints.
