Woman rifles through mailboxes, witness tells police

Police received a report that a woman was carrying a large quantity of mail, and was allegedly entering private property and looking through mailboxes along the 100 block of Mercy Street.

The woman, described as white, in her mid-20s, with blond hair, was seen approaching several houses around 3:10 p.m. on April 9 and rifling through the mailboxes, according to Sgt. Saul Jaeger of the Mountain View Police Department. The woman was seen getting into the passenger side of a vehicle.

The witness did not see the subject actually take any mail, police said, but found the behavior unusual and called the police. Officers were not able to locate the woman.

Thanks for the call. This is a known method for ID theft & check fraud If you have the phone out take a picture will help a lot too. PS the postal service will not allow movement of a mail box unless there is a problem with theft but by then it will be too late.

If you are renting, be aware that California housing code requires landlords to provide LOCKING mailboxes.
