Students create startups

Middle-schoolers gathered this weekend to work on new products during Startup Weekend at Crittenden Middle School.

The annual, fast-paced three-day event is designed to get middle school-aged kids excited about entrepreneurship and new inventions. Nithila and Sriya were part of team MyLine, which eventually won the weekend-long event for their new app, which is designed to reduce wait times at school lunch lines.

Real-world problem solving, collaboration, communication, and accountability in the form of real audiences. Wonderful photos of a wonderful experience! Half a student's school day should look like instruction like this. Glad to see our local public schools innovate.

More like parents provide start up money, material and ideas for students to claim start up successes.

This event was a great example of both what community can do for their schools, and what kids can do on their own. All supplies for the event were donated by RAFT Web Link or found in the school's recycling dumpster. Nothing was purchased other than food and a t-shirt for the kids. Nearly all the parents and staff who organized this do not have students attending the event but volunteered months of late evenings to plan this because they believed it was a valuable experience. 40 students made pitches and teams were formed around the top 11 ideas voted by the kids.
