A 55-year-old man who was stabbed during a violent attack in downtown Mountain View on Saturday died of his injuries Sunday night, according to police. The suspect, a Marin County man, is being held in Santa Clara County jail without bail.

The attack occurred around 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4 in a courtyard on the 500 block of Castro Street, in close proximity of the Center for Performing Arts at the same time as a performance. Officers received reports of a fight in the area, and said that the 43-year-old suspect was still attacking the victim when they arrived. The suspect refused to obey commands by police to stop, according to a statement by the Mountain View Police Department.

Police used a Taser on the suspect, though it was ineffective at stopping his attack. He was eventually restrained by officers and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.

The victim was severely injured and was given emergency first aid treatment before being transported to a local hospital, where he was listed as being in serious but stable condition. The victim later died of his injuries, and the case is now being treated as a homicide investigation, according to an update by police on Monday morning.

As of Monday afternoon, the identity of the victim had not yet been released by the county coroner’s office.

The suspect, who was identified by police as Jan Neal, was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment before he was taken to Santa Clara County jail.

Police are still investigating what caused the fight, and could not say whether the suspect and the victim knew each other.

Anyone who may have witnessed the fight or who has information on the case is asked to contact Det. Dan Garcia at 650-903-6624.

  1. Well I always thought Mountain View was safe. But apparently it is not anymore. I go Downtown all the time…..Hang out. Walk at 10-11-12….and just relaxing enjoying the times. I will now pull back on my visits to Mountain View. Especially now that Cali is a Sanctuary state now.

  2. I applaud your decision to generally not name those arrested; however the same logic should apply to those suspected of murder. The seriousness of the crime does not affect the principle that suspects are innocent until proven guilty. If anything, it is more important to safeguard that principle for more serious crimes!
