A woman whose body was found in the water along the San Francisco Bay Trail in Sunnyvale Thursday has been identified as Chuchu Ma, 23, of Mountain View, the coroner’s office said.

The woman’s body was found Thursday morning by a passing bicyclist on the trail, according to Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Officer Shawn Ahearn. A Google spokeswoman said Ma worked as software engineer in the Mountain View-based company’s developer product team.

“Chuchu was an excellent software engineer in our developer product team,” Google officials said in a statement. “We are devastated to learn of her passing, and our deepestcondolences are with her family and

friends.”

Sunnyvale police are describing it as an “unattended death.” No additional information was immediately available, pending the results of the autopsy report.

  1. This is such sad news, but hits even closer to home because Chuchu was my friend. People should know that she not only was a “software engineer according to her LinkedIn”, but she was actually a wonderful person that had so much going for her. Smart, kind, artistic – gifted both musically and in terms of drawing. When I think about the positive impact a person like her would have had on a community if she had more time, it is such a significant loss (not only to the people who knew her personally).

I’m just almost certain this wasn’t an accident. I hope that whoever hurt her pays not only for the violence they committed against another person, but also comes to know and regret their part in removing such a capable and kind person from society.

  2. I am devastated to hear of this disgraceful death and am sickened to hear “No danger exists, the public is safe.” as a response by the police spokesperson, especially if they ignore the fact that she was naked when found floating in the toxic waste water ditch. This was no accident. My heart and prayers go out to her loved ones and I hope for a true investigation into what happened to her. She deserves it.

I’m so sorry. I read an article yesterday, and while I did not know Chuchu Ma, the news hit close to home for me. I used to work as software engineer at Google, and I can picture her among all the new bright-eyed Googlers announced each week at TGIF. I did see her LinkedIn page, and it’s clear she possessed many gifts and a promising future ahead of her.

I hope they find out more information. I can’t imagine how something like this could happen. It is a real tragedy and I am sure the whole community feels the loss whether they knew her or not.

  4. Does anyone know the location the victim was found? I run this trail and want to be safe. Im very sorry to hear of her dimise and certainly hope her assailant(s) are found.

  5. This is sad news, condolences for her friends and family.

The portion of the Bay Trail adjacent to Moffett Field is not safe. There is one way in, one way out, and nowhere to go if trouble happens because the bay is on one side and Moffett Field fence on the other. There needs to be more lighting, cameras or even a staffed gate onto Moffett Field on that side.

Compounding the problem is that there is no reasonable way for bikes or pedestrians to get from the north side of Mountain View to Sunnyvale. Either you take Ellis St and risk your life on the road or you take the Bay Trail and risk your life on the trail. This problem could be solved in two seconds if Trump and the federal government allowed pedestrians and bicyclists to use Moffett Field as a through path, entering on Moffett and exiting at the now-closed gate close to the Motorola building. I bet Trump won’t lift a finger though.

  6. Tommy G – IF it’s foul play??!! No, it’s a natural death; she took off her clothes and jumped into foul water at night in the middle of December and accidentally drowned!! There is no IF. She was murdered and the PD doesn’t want a panic at Christmas time, so they’re covering it up as best they can. Her family and friends deserve answers and the public needs to be warned. There is a killer out there and I hope that the person is found SOON. I have heard no updates on this story. What’s going on? Why are we not hearing anymore about it? IF indeed!!!
