BraveMaker hosts film, music, discussion

This month's event to focus on the LGBTQ experience

BraveMaker, a local nonprofit arts organization that supports independent filmmakers, is hosting a film screening, discussion and live music event on Friday, Feb. 22.

The event will include the short film "Guardian," by Nicolas Jara, which focuses on themes of unconditional love, loss, patriarchy, toxic masculinity and acceptance within the Latinx community.

Singer-songwriter and LGBTQ advocate Matt Nightingale will perform original songs and share stories and visual artist Erin Ashford will present photography taken in collaboration with the San Mateo County Pride Center.

"I was thinking about why BraveMaker exists -- one of the reasons I think we need this work in the Bay Area is to create safe, brave spaces for empathy. I want to give our community an opportunity to put their guard down, to listen without their defenses up and consider taking action in some way," BraveMaker founder Tony Gapastione told the Weekly. "So this Friday gives us an opportunity for film, art and music to show us a side of humanity that we aren't always familiar with or willing to discuss, or have preconceived ideas that aren't always right. I hope all those that come to any of our events grow in compassion for our fellow humans as if we're sharing a meal together as friends to share how we see the world and how the world has affected who we are."

The event will be held at 7 p.m. at Box Inc, 900 Jefferson Ave., Redwood City. Wine and beer will be available for guests age 21+. Tickets are $20. Go to eventbrite.
