Gunn boys earn soccer win in SCVAL De Anza Division

The Gunn High boys’ soccer team picked up right where it left off last year, beating host Homestead, 2-1, in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division opener Tuesday.

The defending Central Coast Section Division I champion Titans, who won their first CCS title in 17 years last year, became the first ‘B’ league team to win a Division I title after winning the El Camino Division.

Gunn was promoted into the De Anza Division following last year’s performance and hosts city rival Palo Alto on Thursday night.

The Vikings dropped a 2-0 decision at home to Los Altos in their season opener Tuesday.

Al Suzuki and Dane Jefferson each scored for Gunn.

Menlo School made it two straight in West Bay Athletic League action with another 7-0 victory, this one over visiting Castilleja on Tuesday.

Addie Ahlstrom and Tricia Zhang, the Knights’ top two singles players, each swept their sets without dropping a game. Sophomores Sofia Labatt and Charlotte Yao won at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively.

The top doubles team of Lindsey Ball and Siena Bundy sparked a sweep of the doubles’ matches.

Senior Penelope Anderson and junior Alex Viret won at two doubles while senior Elizabeth Westermann and junior Rupal Nimaiyar won at No. 3 doubles.

In another WBAL match, host Sacred Heart Prep fell to Notre Dame Belmont 5-2 on Tuesday.

All four singles matches were competitive, with three going to a third-set tiebreaker. Alyssa Turenne dropped her first set but came to win with a 10-5 tiebreaker.

SHP’s top two singles players, Natalie Dias and Sara Quinlin, each forced a third set before losing.

The top doubles team of Margaret Kloninger-Stever and Anneka Goel also won their match for the Gators.

In the SCVAL, freshman Aoi Kunimoto and sophomore Kailana Baker-Matsuoka each won their match but Gunn fell to host Los Altos, 5-2.

Palo Alto (6-3) lost, 5-2, to visiting Monta Vista on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Sacred Heart Prep (0-3) travels to play at Crystal Springs Uplands, Menlo (3-1, 2-1) goes to Notre Dame Belmont and Castilleja (1-1) hosts Nueva.

Gunn (8-2) hosts Homestead on Wednesday.
