Police arrested an Elk Grove woman on Monday after she was suspected of lighting fires inside two Target stores, including one in Mountain View, and stealing merchandise on the way out.
Alameda police officers arrested the 40-year-old woman in San Francisco on March 29 after she was identified as the suspect in the two arsons, one at a Target in Alameda on March 15 and another in Mountain View on March 29. The fire in Mountain View caused the retail store to shut down for several hours.
Police say the woman entered the Target around 10:20 a.m. and lit a fire next to racks of women's clothing before running out of the store with items, according to police spokeswoman Katie Nelson. She drove away in a Hyundai sedan.
While searching for the suspect, police officers quickly found she had matched the description from a similar case in Alameda, which also involved arson inside a Target store. She was detained without incident and arrested the same day.
The investigation is still ongoing, Nelson said, and criminal charges against the woman are pending. She is currently being held in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, and is facing one felony count of arson in an inhabited dwelling. Her arraignment is scheduled for April 1.
