The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has declared Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 23 and 24, “Winter Spare the Air Days,” with the air quality in the Bay Area forecast to be unhealthy.

It is illegal for Bay Area residents to burn wood or other solid fuels in fireplaces, wood stoves and inserts, pellet stoves, outdoor fire-pits, or other wood-burning devices on Spare the Air days. Homes without permanently installed heating are exempt from the wood-burning ban.

Research shows that smoke from wood-burning fires is linked to illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and lung disease, and is especially harmful for children and the elderly.

For more information about the wood-burning rule, or to check before you burn, click here or call 1-877-4NO-BURN.

You can also call 1-800-430-1515 and register to receive automatic phone calls when a Winter Spare the Air alert has been called.

  1. What?!!! It’s a tradition for our family to watch a Christmas movie with a roaring fire burning. Really how can the weather be bad, when it’s supposed to be a warm and clear day. UGH!!

  2. Use common sense. Don’t pollute on sunny days. If you must light up, only do it when it is raining. The pollution is so thick right now, we can see and smell it.

  3. As an asthmatic who is currently really struggling with bronchitis, I an assure you that this is not a “stupidity.” Please do not put unnecessary smoke into the air.
