A Mountain View man allegedly driving under the influence was arrested after his car passenger was killed in a crash in Los Altos Thursday night, Los Altos police said.

Miroslav Samardzija, 33, was arrested after a crash was reported at 11:07 p.m. around Fremont Avenue and Marymeade Lane, near Marymeade Park, according to police.

Officers arrived to the area and found a 2005 Chevrolet involved in an accident.

The driver, Samardzija, was able to get out of the car, but the passenger was seriously injured, police said.

Emergency crews responded and pronounced the passenger dead. He has only been identified as a 27-year-old Mountain View man, according to police. He was identified as Tai-Jin Lee by a spokeswoman from the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s office.

Samardzija was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. At the hospital, officers said he had been driving under the influence, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, DUI and reckless driving, but remains at the hospital for treatment, police said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Los Altos police Sgt. Paul Arguelles at (650) 947-2770.

  1. RIP Mr. Lee.

Does anyone have any more information about either of these people? Where in Mountain View did they live? What did they do for a living?

  2. @RIP:

Home addresses of vehicular death victims typically aren’t reported by the media. It’s a decency/privacy thing. It’s really up to the family of the victim to provide information. If they want to keep the matter private, that’s their prerogative.

If you want more information about the people involved, call the Los Altos police number in the last sentence of the article.

  3. Well, I care where he worked. I also care whether he is US born or whether he is one of these foreign tech workers brought here on an H-1B visa.

  4. Reader, if you are looking for some ammo to support your political and social beliefs, go somewhere else. A person died. Show some respect.

  5. You know I dont’ care who this driver is or where he works or where he lives. What I CARE ABOUT is that his friend/passenger is dead and the driver was drunk on whatever.

Zero Tolerance for drunk drivers and highest penalties for killer DUI drivers. Don’t think “understanding” is an appropriate response.
