Maureen Patricia Martin
April 19, 1923-June 3, 2022
Palo Alto, CA
Maureen Patricia McGivern Martin was born on April 19, 1923, on a farm in Marengo, Iowa. She was the second eldest of six children born to Loretta and Peter McGivern.
Maureen (Micky) attended elementary school at Oak Grove School, the one room schoolhouse where the McGivern children and their numerous cousins were educated. In high school, Micky excelled in tennis, basketball and drama and went on to attend college at the University of Iowa. Upon graduation, she taught high school drama and English.
Micky met John Martin at a church Newman Club dance, and they were married in June 1948. In 1951, they put their new baby in the car and drove across country to California for John’s first teaching job. They ultimately landed in Palo Alto – where Micky and her growing family resided for more than 70 years. In 1968, Micky started working at the Stanford Law Library – part-time at first and full-time after all the kids were grown – and enjoyed many years interacting with the students and staff there. When John died in 2014, Micky chose to move from the family home on Murdoch Drive to the Palo Alto Commons. She lived and participated in that community’s activities until she passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 3, 2022. She was 99 years young.
Micky devoted her life to raising her six children, Ann Martin Sonne (Scott), Chris Martin (Beth), Mary Martin Henry (Clarke), Kathy Martin Collado (John), John P. Martin, and Tom Martin (Suzanne). She was a great mom—known for her talent with a needle and thread and for her ability to extend meals to feed any number of guests her family invited over for dinner. Micky enjoyed holiday gatherings, bridge games with friends and was a regular attendee and cheerleader at her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. She was resilient, ever-cheerful and optimistic. She loved dancing and parties and big earrings and hats. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Micky is survived by her sister, Theresa Mauer (Memphis, Tennessee), six children, fifteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, June 23 at 3:00 pm at Our Lady of the Rosary Church (3233 Cowper St., Palo Alto), where Micky (and John) were active parishioners for over fifty years.
