Shellie Patricia Duggan
July 19, 1951-Dec. 28, 2017
Grass Valley, California

Long-time Woodside resident, Shellie Duggan, passed away on December 28, 2017 at her ranch in Grass Valley after a battle against cancer. She was surrounded with the love of her family, friends and beloved animals. Born on July 19, 1951 to Janet Anne and Lowell Harmon Duggan in Alameda, California, she settled with her family in Woodside in 1963 and lived there until her move to Grass Valley in 2008. A graduate of Woodside Elementary School and Woodside High School, Shellie was known for her athletic and artistic skills. She graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

A long-time member of the San Mateo County Horseman’s Association, Shellie was an avid horsewoman. She was one of the few women in the history of horse racing in California to hold her “Exercise License.” She was known for working out thoroughbreds at 4:30 a.m. at the Bay Meadows Race Track. She brought alternative methods of training to those horses, by cross-training them with endurance techniques, taking them away from the track for long rides up over the coastal range to Half Moon Bay. She was proud to have co-owned a successful racehorse. She later concentrated on endurance racing. She came in the Top Ten of the Tevis six times (a 24-hour endurance race on horseback in the foothills of the Sierra).

Shellie loved to line dance. She and her mother, Janet, participated in the largest line dance in the world during a 4th of July parade in Redwood City.

In 2008 she moved to her ranch in Grass Valley where she continued to be engaged in the horse and rural community as an active volunteer and donor.

She is survived by her sister, Susan, and her brother, Charles, along with her niece, Coral, and her nephews, Justin and Declan.  She will be missed by her many friends, loved ones and beloved animals.
