How do you think California should deal with its budget deficit?

Asked in downtown Mountain View. Pictures and interviews by Emily Efland.

"I think that California should deal with its budget shortfall by increasing taxes across the board, and especially towards the higher income."

Dan Zieber, Sunnyvale

"What I don't want to be cut is the education funds, because my wife is a teacher. Another possibility is the retirement funds, but again, my wife would be hurt from that."

Dean E., Santa Clara

"I definitely think the budget cuts should come from the prison system. We shouldn't be pushing the budget cuts onto education while keeping the budget for the prisons."

Lauren Barton, Redlands

"I don't really know where the budget cuts should come from, because they've been cutting for ten years. It's just so hard to find any money anymore. They're going to have to raise taxes, there's no other option."

Henry Jordan, Palo Alto

"I think the super rich must make a move and pay their taxes duly, and contribute to the betterment of the economic situation of California."

Niru Srivastava, Cupertino
