The Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza is now fully automated and drivers must purchase some form of transponder to pay. Do you support that decision?

Asked in downtown Mountain View. Photos and interviews by Nick Veronin.

"I support the fully automated bridge toll-taking. It's a pain to carry cash in the car all the time; I never have it anyway. So, for me, it's just going to make life easier."

David Haley, Los Altos

"I'm in full support of the automated system. You know, I think it has huge upsides. I don't carry much cash. I would love to see it on all Bay Area bridges. I think it's a good idea and helpful to the average person. Plus, it speeds things up, it would seem."

Steve Saccone, Mountain View

"I'm for it. I just got my FasTrak. The only thing that would be better is if they would drop the tolls. There's no reason for those tolls. I come from Pittsburgh, ... and there aren't any tolls on (our) bridges. ... The only thing more idiotic than making people pay tolls to cross a bridge is to make them stop their 4,000-ton car and hand somebody $6."

Joe DiNucci, Saratoga

"I'd say it's unfortunate for the people involved (who may lose their jobs), but it's probably a good move for efficiency."

Stephen Curran, Mountain View

"As somebody who has lived back East for a number of years, automation back there included an option to have a cash drop. It was fully automated from the standpoint that you could use plastic, you could have a transponder, or if you were a visitor and you didn't have access to any of those things you could have a cash option. If you're going to fully automate it, have an option for cash, as well."

Carolyn Robertson, Campbell
