Voices Around Town

Asked in downtown Mountain View. Photos and interviews by Samson So.

How do you feel about drones being used commercially in the U.S.?

"Domestically, I'd be strongly against it because of the possibility of invasion of privacy. In military settings, provided they're used with good judgment, I'd be okay with that."

Randy Beeman, Sunnyvale

"I don't believe we should be allowing drones to monitor citizens. Drone use could easily be abused and without permission they could see into our private lives."

Bruce Simonsen, Florida

"I think it's totally fine if we use small drones for surveillance, like cars moving too fast or burglaries. But it's like a step in a dangerous direction, because if we do that we could ask ourselves ... "Why can't we just look at everyone's faces and add facial recognition?'"

Rasmus Andersson, San Francisco

"It could predict specific people who could be more harmful or could be future threats and that would be an encroachment of rights, especially if they haven't done anything yet."

Annemarie Gugelmann, San Francisco

"I think there are differences between surveillance drones and drones that are useful in certain situations outside of surveillance. Like, I'm sure there's a lot of farming uses."

Nathan Borror, Palo Alto
