He was born in Oneonta, N.Y. to Clifford J. and Emilyn B. Eldred on Feb. 19, 1925. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, later graduating from Syracuse University, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He worked for several years at his father's Packard dealership and in 1959, began a 31-year career at IBM as systems engineer. He worked at several locations in New York state, and finished his career in Palo Alto.
After he retired, he earned a paralegal certificate from the University of San Francisco. He was a member of the choir at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mountain View for 24 years, and was a longtime member and treasurer of the Mountain View IBM PC Club. A member of the Alpha Romeo Association of California, he often drove his red 1986 Spider around San Jose and the coast, his family said. He was a supporter of City Lights Theatre, San Jose Opera, San Jose Repertory Theatre and Symphony Silicon Valley, and enjoyed traveling and photography, family members said.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; children Nancy Dunkly, Robert Eldred and Steven Eldred; step-children Michael Gough and Thomas Gough; grandchildren Robyn Vera, Nolan Dunkly, Andrew Eldred and Daniel Eldred; and four great-grandchildren.
A visitation is set for from 5-9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, with a vigil service from 7-8 p.m., at Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 W. El Camino Real in Mountain View. The funeral mass is set for 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, at St. Joseph Church, 582 Hope St., Mountain View. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Los Altos.
