Three Mountain View teenagers are in custody on hate crime and other charges after allegedly shouting racial epithets and threatening to kill four 11-year-old Latino boys on Mercy Street.

Police arrested the suspects, all white males ages 14 and 15, on Friday, Dec. 5 after they allegedly chased the victims down the 1200 block of Mercy Street with a replica firearm, yelling slurs and threatening them.

The victims told police they were walking home from Graham Middle School when the suspects shouted “racially motivated” comments about Mexicans from inside a home, where one of the suspects lives, according to police spokesperson Liz Wylie. The two groups of boys began to argue, and the suspects came out of the house with what looked like a firearm, she said — it was actually a BB gun — and continued to yell “hateful comments related to what they thought was the victims’ national origin.”

“The victims never said anything racially oriented,” Wylie added.

The suspects, all Mountain View High School students, also threatened to kill the victims with the weapon, she said.

Police arrested all three on charges of hate crimes, criminal threats, brandishing a replica firearm and conspiracy to commit a felony. One of the suspects, age 15, was also charged with possession of marijuana. None had prior criminal records. As of press time, all three were still in custody.

“To put it in perspective, these are all kids that did something very bad and stupid,” Wylie said.

The Police Department’s new Youth Services Unit provided counseling to the victims following the incident.

This is the second possible hate crime in Mountain View in the last few months. In October, Spanish-language signs belonging to the elementary school district appeared on Shoreline Boulevard with “No More Aliens” spray-painted in red. District administrators said the vandalism was a hate crime, but police said they did not have enough information to make that assertion.

Police hope local leaders will come together to improve race relations so that incidents like these don’t happen again. Wylie said police Chief Scott Vermeer intended to discuss hate crimes during an upcoming Challenge Team meeting, where community leaders discuss issues facing at-risk students.

“We don’t have hate crimes very often,” she said. “Because there has been racial tension, we want to keep the community aware.”

  1. the kids who did this are typical teenage douchebags … and are usually home with no adult supervision. Problem is they are now old enough to cause real trouble. Lets see if they stay in juvenile jail for more than a week

  2. … sounds like these kids need some diversity education and attitude adjustment. Please help them so that we can all get along. Shouting racial epitaphs are cruel and show no respect.

  3. The Clockwork Orange :

This is incredible ! … Two Latinos have been brutally killed in New York City in less than a month :

Jose Sucuzhanay and Marcelo Lucero in Long Island, New York City.

Add these to the brutal beating and kicking that took the life of Luis Ramirez in Shenandoah Pennsylvania last July.

These Brutal Murders are repugnant. The special Cruelty, Sadism and Inhumanity. The victims were all hard working, peaceful, honest and nice people.

I would consider all these attackers as perfect Terrorists and Cowards.

I have a blog to denounce Racial Murders and Racial Hatred. And to profile the good things of the Victims and their Poor families :

  4. All of you that are against these kids that did this “crime” – screw you. You don’t know these people so don’t try to argue against them. This is not what really happened, and it is a lie. Those stupid mexican kids shouted and yelled at them first, trying to act tough ( as all mexicans try to do). These other 3 harmless kids defended themselfs by shouting back. They did NOT use any airsoft gun or chase them down the street. The press and the cops just extended the story and try to go against them, because they’re teenagers, and have been confronted before about this crap.
I will prove any of you people wrong that with to argue against me about this.
Get you facts right people before you start to take sides.

  5. Wow Jesse! You are such the role model….How could you defend anyone, regardless of their heritage, when they have so clearly violated the rights of another in such a way that will continue to bring about hatred and spread evil propaganda! What a shame on you… oh wait, I guess your such a great person and highly intellectual….Yeah Right!! “stupid Mexicans”!.. It’s people like you that should get educated about what it means to be human and what it means to be civil.

  6. Like it or not, we are still talking about kids on both sides of this issue. Just maybe they all acted stupid. I’m a little alarmed by a hate crime being applied to this. There was plenty of childish hate going on when I was in school. Then everyone grew up and learned and got on with their lives.

  7. Ned,

I don’t usually agree with you, but you are the voice of reason here. I support your comment 100% for its big picture perspective.

  8. Why is everyone so quick to reply when kids do something wrong? Kids still have a chance to correct their mistakes and learn from them. Adults don’t. Not one comment was placed regarding the Mountain View man who cold-blooded murdered three co-workers. Three innocent, educated people are DEAD, and not one comment was made. That man had plenty of time to change his mind. He has no remorse. What message are we sending to our Mountain View kids? The people who have commented here about the Mtn. View kids are sexist and warped. Lay off the kids, damn it. AGAIN, NOT ONE COMMENT WAS MADE. AMAZING.

  9. There are victims in this story. And I am sure a judge will take into account that the people who committed the crime(s) against them are teenagers.

  10. Hey smart ass, as I said before, you don’t know the whole story, you’re only reading one side. Maybe listen to the kids who “committed” this “crime”. You’re all just going against the teenage kids and assuming everything, and only saying how “innocent” the mexican kids are. Listen to the voices of our future leaders, not our future gang members.
Again, I will personally argue against you (and prove you wrong) if any of you want to try and argue back.

  11. Hey Jesse sounds like you might have been in the area when all this happened. Why aren’t you in juvenile hall with your buddies then? I don’t think any of you guys are cut out to be future leaders, especially since you get off on yelling at 11yr olds from inside your house, then have to use a plastic gun to scare them off. Sounds like a bunch of losers rather than leaders. But then again, you guys might be just what they are looking for to lead some lame group down in Alabama.

  12. Really Dave? So you also really believe all of this bullsh!t, also? Those stupid 11 yr olds are the losers here. Telling lies to the cops to get teenagers in trouble? Come on! And then everyone against them, just because that their teens hanging out with each other?
I thought that stupid cops had better things to do then to arrest these kids for almost nothing. Shouldn’t they be arresting the kids robbing from banks or dealing drugs?

Let me point out just some of the very many lies that were in the article.
Lie 1: They did not run down the street after them with a plastic gun at all.
Lie 2: The little kids appointed them first and started to yell at them, the teenagers were sticking up for themselves.
Lie 3: Did not yell anything that this crap says they did such as yell “hateful comments related to what they thought was the victims’ national origin.”

And, I’d be happy to point out more lies if you’d like.

  13. Jesse,

Would you mind letting us know all the lies? These lies need to be out in the open so we all know what is exactly going on.

I appreciate all you know, thank you.

  14. I would just like to point out that, newspaper writers are supposed to be unbiased but this article only has one point of view, if the opposing opinions had a say then maybe we could get a a better idea of what actually happened… because i think that some things are blown out of proportion and other main points in the story are ignored…
next time i think everyone should look into the situation more before making bold comments about the situation
    thank you

  15. I don’t know what happened during the incedent, but I do know those 3 teenage boys from Mt. View are trouble, have been doing drugs since jr high, and are now also providing/selling drugs to other kids. They, along with their friends, are known as being druggie loosers at school…and from what I know their parents, who are never around and give the kids complete freedom to do whatever they want, are partially to blame. I know for a fact that these same kids DO make racial slurs at their school…let’s not forget that they were arrested for posession of drugs too. They are definitely not innocent here and I’m just glad they were finally busted and are out of our school. Let’s also not forget how stupid they were to do this from their own home…everyone involved now knows where they live.

  16. MVHS PARENT,

Kids make mistakes and they learn from them, no matter how they were parented. Every kid grows up to be an adult, just like yourself. Some day these kids will look back at some of the stupid things they have done and most likely regret it. Everybody makes mistakes and just because these kids have made a mistake does not make them any different than you. Lay off these Mountain View kids. Why don’t you come up with a solution instead of talking bad about them. If you are positive and understanding, maybe we can forgive these kids and maybe try to encourage them to avoid such conflicts in their future. Let’s all work with our youth and try to guide them into our crazy society. I have 3 kids, who are all different. Mistakes have been made by some, but I still love them all the same. Their mistakes certainly do not make me a bad parent. I am guessing that you have made some stupid mistakes in your lifetime because nobody is perfect.

Please think before you talk bad about someone.

    Mother of 3

  17. MVHS PARENT,

CAN I ASK HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN VIEW MAN THAT KILLED HIS 3 CO-WORKERS IN COLD BLOOD? HE WAS A GROWN MAN, NOT A TEENAGER. HE HAS A WIFE AND CHILDREN THAT HE ABANDONED FOR HIS CHOICE HE MADE. HE ABRUPTLY TOOK THREE PEOPLE FROM THEIR FAMILIES AND DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON AT THAT. HE HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO CHANGE HIS MIND. BUT HE DIDN’T

I FIND IT VERY INTERESTING THAT NOT ONE MOUNTAIN VIEW RESIDENT COMMENTED ON THAT STORY. IS IT BECAUSE IT HAPPENED IN SUNNYVALE? THE MAN LIVED IN MOUNTAIN VIEW BUT YET PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SO QUICK TO COMMENT ABOUT THE KIDS IN MOUNTAIN VIEW.

    DISGUSTED MOTHER OF 3

  18. yes kids do make mistakes…but ending up in juvinal hall is a little more than a “mistake”! Give me a break!! And I never said they shouldn’t get another chance or that their parents don’t or shouldn’t love them…I just said they got what they deserved and I am glad they are out of our school ~ at least until someone teaches them about their “mistakes”..oops, I meant “CRIMES”. One thing we agree I on, mother of three, is that they are stupid kids. Hey, but the silver lining is now they have something to write about for their college application essays when they move forward to be our next “world leaders” as Jessie (another loser) pointed out. Should I say it again in case you didn’t hear me the first time GIVE ME A BREAK! They are where everyone knew they would end up…in big trouble…and maybe the police can help them straighten up…because their parents o
obviosly can’t/don’t. Oh, and one more thing…I never committed a crime, yelled out racial slurs, or got arrested – my mistakes were true mistakes, not hate crimes and drug charges. They might want to look for a new school because I don’t think they are going to be welcomed back by the Hispanic community…maybe they should apply to St. Francis.

  19. Hey disgusted-I didn’t comment about it because I didn’t know about it! I think that man is a loser too…and statistics show that the three boys will probably end up as adr crimanals too. Maybe you should stop reading all the blogs and start raising your own kids. This is the only blog I have ever replied to because I thought people might want to know these three boys are far from normal teens and have been going down the wrong path for a few years now. They are losers and got what they deserved…and I hope the sunnyvale man does too!

  20. So Jesse- yeah I want to know the truth, were you there or not? If not, how do you have so much insight as to what happened? Was one of the boys texting you while it all happened? Maybe one of them has video of the whole incident? Maybe the police would like to see and hear the evidence, so you’re talking to the wrong people.
Sounds like your pals weren’t very well liked in school or in their neighborhood. Usually, when kids do something this serious,it’s been building up for a while and they just weren’t caught before.
I agree with the last posting that “mistakes” should not include some of the things these kids are purported to have done. I hope they learn their lesson and looks like the police/social workers are the ones who are going to teach it to them…if they’re smart enough to learn something maybe they’ll make something of themselves one day.

  21. You guy are all idiots. Seriously. You just think because they paper says that they did this, that they are horrible teens that should spend the rest of their life in prison.
Half of you that are writing this carp are liars, and know nothing about the people out side of this story, or what REALLY happened.
You are just guess that just because they had drugs; they are drug dealers and do them all the time. Let me tell you – you’re wrong. And, I don’t give a crap if any of you are an MVSH parent, because you probably still don’t know them and have never met them. Plus, they got some of that info wrong, but I’m not going to point it out, because if you guys know the real story you would find it easily.
Oh, I don’t give a donkey crap who you are – MVSH parent, mother of 3, or whoever – I’ll still prove you wrong! I would really like to put some of you in juvenile hall, for something that you didn’t even do, and see how you feel.

  22. My first thought is, “And we just moved to Mountain View…for this?”

I blame the teenage kids’ parenting (or lack thereof). There is no way my son would be sitting up at home alone with friends with drugs and a BB gun–period. There is no excuse.

What’s more…where did these kids learn so much hate? All it takes is just one bigot (possibly a parent). If you don’t teach your children about racial equality, they will learn the opposite from someone else. Here is the result.

There seems to be a lot of tension on this board–but no one has offered a solution.

FIRST, more parental involvement. ALL of the kids (regardless of who did what) involved and their guardians should be required to do some form of people-oriented community work in one another’s neighborhoods. Go to one another’s churches or community centers, read books to elementary school kids, volunteer at elder care centers–ALL TOGETHER.

SECOND, my kid will attend MV High someday and I don’t want stoners there–they need to find a way to test students for drugs with a no tolerance policy. Say what you will about personal rights and what not, but prevention is always cheaper than correction. If my kid was in high school and *did nothing* but just go to school, well, that would be my first red flag. Again, parents need a clue.

THIRD, whomever brought the BB gun into the situation needs a stiff lesson in what can happen with guns–deadly or imaginary. I’m sure there is a repository of gory pictures with sad gun stories attached to them–that ought to get the message across. And if the kid is sadistic and has no remorse, then a follow up what happens to young men in prison ought to wake him up.

I recently read about a would-be robber holding up a store with pointed fingers and a paper bag, and subsequently ending up with someone calling his bluff–instant death penalty. Even if you do not care about other people, if you value your own life in any way, you will not threaten others with guns. These kids ought to know better, but then again…where were the parents?

The same parents that should have taught these kids about racial equality should have also taught them about gun control.

One last comment–I was raised by one of the most bigoted persons I ever knew–my father. He also owned several guns. From an early age, he taught us never to touch them and what the guns were for–we never went near them. He also taught us a very skewed view of the world around us when it came to race–and we believed him.

For many years, we had a lot of hate in our family–so I know exactly what these teenagers could have grown up with. Only when I went to college did I see a different view of the world. I went back home and it was hard, but I actually taught my father differently. He is now no longer a bigot, but one of the most accepting, kind, decent human beings I know. He has a biracial grandson and is the perfect grandfather to him, and a wonderful father-in-law. You can teach an old dog new tricks.

So some new learning is needed–for the teenagers and the parents. And, in a way, perhaps years from now once the anger has dissipated and the perpetrators have learned differently–all the kids will look back and realize how blessed they are…because this situation could have ended up so much worse than it actually did.

  23. Well, Dave…I not going to tell any of you how I have so much insight. Nor am I going to go to the police and tell them, because they probably wont believe me, and still listen to those stupid kids.
I’m not talking to the wrong people, I want you stubborn humans to get it past your thick skulls and not assume everything from this 1 article!
Actually Dave, again you are wrong, and there you go assuming something again, also. They are very well like and have more friends then any of you ever had in your entire life time.

  24. What if you were a single mother that had to work full time to put food on the table; would you still be at home watching your kids. These teenagers are very responsible.
Oh yeah, sorry lady, there are going to be stoners everywhere you go in life.
Screw you rules. As I said before these kids are responsible and don’t need people watching over them 24/7. These stupid little kids just pissed them off to an extent

  25. MVHS PARENT

Before you open your mouth again, my kids have been grown for eighteen+ years now. I am done raising kids. Juvenile Hall is not a place any child should be sent to. What about rehabilitation instead of keeping them in the system. Juvenile Hall turns kids into animals, not adults. Oh, and the Sunnyvale man happens to be a Mountain View man. Wake up.

Sounds like you were a loser and still are.

    Mother of 3

  26. Jesse,

as much as people don’t like the police, they are pretty good at telling who is feed them crap. They hear it all the time. If you were a decent person, the police might believe you.

  27. Yeah, you guy are pissing me off by thinking you know the who thing. You guys need to get your head out of your ass and listen to other people.
Oh, mother of 3? I don’t care if you have raised kids or never even had them. Don’t just start of by calling me a loser. You think that I am wrong? Get the facts first lady, then we’ll talk.

  28. Calvin,
What the hell do you mean I’m blowing smoke? I know the whole story and you guys don’t.
The police assume everything from the little 11yr olds.
I do know what I’m talking about, it seems like you don’t know what your talking about.

  29. Jesse

Calm down, slow down and take the time to finish typing your words before you submit your crap. Why don’t you hit your monitor instead, take out your aggressions because YOU ARE A LOSER, MVHS PARENT.

Please go back to school and get an education before you write here again.

  30. Are you talking to me? I have a better education than you probably ever got. I’ll write here all I want to.

    I’m gonna say it again…
    You’re a loser
These teens didn’t do half of the crap it says they did in here
You guys don’t know the real story

  31. Hey mvnewbie- sorry to burst your bubble, but this sort of things happens all over the place. And if you don’t want you kids to face “stoners” in high school…you better start home schooling them. Not being mean…just real.

  32. Jesse,

Someday your house may be robbed, you may be involved in a head on accident, or your life threatened. Whatever it may be I hope you don’t call the police to come help you. You don’t deserve it.

  33. Calvin,
Do you know me? No, I don’t think you do. So don’t assume anything.
That is a horrible thing to wish upon someone. I hope someone takes you in a alleyway and beats the crap out of you, and then the police don’t help you. You deserve all of this to happen to you.

  34. Thank you Serri Anne. With that we will lock this comment thread. It seems to be ruled by anger rather than rational thinking.

Jesse: Instead of promising everyone that you’re right, and we should just take your word for it, do your friends (?) a favor and take your story to the police.
