A 72-year-old man and his female caregiver were the victims of a home-invasion robbery this morning on the 1300 block of Phyllis Ave., police said.

Dispatchers received a call at 9:15 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, reporting that masked gunmen had broken into the Mountain View home and bound the man and his caregiver, Jaime Garret, a police spokeswoman said. The robbers proceeded to burglarize the home. The suspects fled and one of the occupants, although still bound, was able to call for help.

Both the man and the woman were still tied when police arrived, Garret said. The man had been struck in the face during the robbery. He was transported to a local hospital for his injuries, which were not life-threatening.

There are no known witnesses at this time, she said.

Garret said many details surrounding the robbery could not yet be made public, because the investigation is ongoing. It is not known what, if anything, was stolen from the home

Garret could not give the number of gunmen involved or provide an estimate for what time they broke in to the home. She could only say that there was more than one assailant, they carried at least one gun and wore masks.

A man who lives down the street from the victims’ home said he and his wife were returning home from a morning stroll when he saw the police outside. The man, who asked not to be identified, said that police “canvassed the neighbors,” but as far as he knew, no one had heard anything during the robbery.

The man said he had no idea a robbery was taking place and hadn’t heard anything suspicious.

He speculated that the robbers may have targeted the home because the elderly man living there was a collector of various things. “A lot of it is junk, but some of it is good, too,” the man said.

When asked how he felt that such a robbery took place near his home, the man said he was not concerned for his safety. “It doesn’t bother me,” he said. “I’m too old to worry about stuff like that.”

Garret said that the police advise anyone confronted by armed robbers to comply with the assailants’ requests.

“The best thing the a victim of a robbery can do is cooperate with the robbers,” Garret said, “and once they are in a safe location, contact the police for help.”

Anyone with information regarding the robbery can call the Mountain View Police Department at 650-903-6344. All callers may remain anonymous.

  1. It’s usually the case when a burglary like this happens the victim(s) had contact with the robbers before hand. These criminals targeted the home specifically because they knew what was inside, who would be home, etc, meaning they probably had been in the house prior to this.

I assume the investigators will ask if the old man or caregiver recently had any work done inside the house, i.e. plumbing, electrical, painting. More often than not, it’s these people who return and rob the house. Heck, it even could have been friends/relatives of the caregiver for all we know.

  2. I am surprised the old man didn’t have a gun…Should be a requirement for the Caregiver as well, be armed that is. Bad guys better not try and invade my home…An armed society is a polite one!

  3. Yeah, why no description of the MASKED gunmen?

USA, if you read other press releases from MVPD, they generally have descriptions of suspects. Your charge is baseless

  4. Usual police comments… I urge every person to have a weapon (shotguns are the best)… leave it in an accessable yet hidden place and blow them away.

Let our City’s Libs put signs on their front doors “No Guns In This House).

Did the thugs talk ? Did they have accents (of any race or nationality)? At least put up a sign (true or not) “This Home is under 24/7 video camera coverage”. What were they wearing ? (Cuz these folks probably didn’t change clothes after they went back to their homes or jobs).

  5. That’s scary. I hope the elderly man and caregiver are both okay after this despicable act. I agree with other posts. More law abiding citizens should be armed to drive out the low life filths that walk these streets. It should be mandatory to know how to operate guns.

  6. Has anyone suspected the caregiver? There’s so much elder abuse lately (even the Costco magazine this monthly has an insightful article) that I hope this touchy subject isn’t being overlooked.

  7. I’m amazed there are so many gun lovers in Mountain View!!! I thought my wonderful city had completely been taken over by the latte sipping, tree hugging, yuppies and liberals! I agree with ALL of the comments endorsing law abiding citizens be armed!! I hope the victims in this case recover (mentally, emotionally, physically) from this attack soon. I don’t know if their is still room, but the Second Amendment Foundation’s “Gun Rights Policy Conference” (http://www.saf.org/default.asp?p=grpc) is this weekend (Sept 24-26).

  8. Get a dog, a big loyal companion that will alarm intruders, alert you, and protect your life with his own. Unlike a gun it cannot be turned against you.

  9. What a bunch of morons. You will never get the gun you have. If anything it will be used against you. What are you going to do, run around with your gun in your hand all the time? Big bravado talk…must have nothing else to do or have other issues.

  10. “Anyone with information regarding the robbery can call the Mountain View Police Department”

Yet again, the police ask for the public’s help but won’t provide information that could enable the public to help such as a description of the criminals.

This PC crap is out of hand.

  11. eric – they know the number of attackers, their approximate height and build, and the color of the hoodie they were wearing but are choosing not to release it. Why?
