Incision-free cancer surgery at 91

Original post made on Jan 17, 2011

Jean Stuetzle, 91, was diagnosed with lung cancer in April. Thanks to a high-tech, non-invasive treatment she received at El Camino Hospital in June, doctors are optimistic that her tumor is entirely removed. She is now exercising regularly and "eats as good a meal as I do," her husband says.

"None of these studies have shown any general survival benefit over conventional treatment methods. By increasing the accuracy with which treatment is delivered there is a potential for dose escalation, and potentially a subsequent increase in effectiveness, particularly in local control rates. However the studies cited are so far limited in scope, and more extensive research will need to be completed in order to show any effects on survival." ... From Wikipedia.

The CyberKnife system is sold by the company Accuray, located in Sunnyvale, California. (A once-highly-hyped but currently rather a struggling company.)

I am very happy for this patient's prognosis.

That said, this will not happen under Obama Care, given a patient's advanced age and the increasing costs that will come with the plan. 91-year-olds will have to deal with whatever they have.

It would be interesting to know how this procedure was financed (e.g., was this a case of the hospital 'farming' an insurance policy') since it would seem that there might be many very younger candidates who might benefit from it.

The article has a typo -- it says they have been married 16 years but it should be 61 years.

And Dick Cheney is in line to get a heart transplant. No wonder health care is broke!
